*Please Note* This event has been postponed to the summer of 2021 to coincide with the summer Olympic games that have been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.
On Friday, July 24, 2020, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games will commence in Tokyo, JAPAN, with athletes from more than 200 nations competing for two weeks before its final ceremony closing the games on Sunday, August 9.
As a prelude to the global event, on Sunday July 19, 2020, the Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego will host its inaugural Mount Olympus – Running with the Gods— a marathon of sorts. It will not be a 25-mile race commemorating the distance Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to inform the city of its improbable victory. After all, there is no evidence of San Diego being invaded in July except, perhaps, by tourists.
The celebratory event will combine a 5K run, a 1- mile walk and a “virtual run” for those who cannot travel to our fair city. But unlike most other running events, this one will boast the true Hellenic spirit that civilized the world.
The day will be an affair that will include Greek food, music and family-centric fun. Yes — an event that welcomes the sound of children running, laughing, playing and at times driving their parents nuts.
